Getting Started — Create Your First Tag in 2 Minutes
Three short videos that walk you through sign-in, workspace setup, and creating your first GTM tag with GTM Event Helper.
Sign in to Google Tag Manager
Open the extension popup and click Sign in with Google. Choose the Google account that has access to the GTM container you want to manage. GTM Event Helper only requests the tagmanager.edit.containers scope — no read access to anything else.
- Click the GTM Event Helper icon in your Chrome toolbar
- Click Sign in with Google
- Pick the account that owns your GTM container
- Authorize the
tagmanager.edit.containersscope
Pick your account, container & workspace
After sign-in, the extension pulls the list of GTM accounts you have access to. Select the account, container, and workspace where new tags should be created. You can switch workspaces at any time from the popup header.
- Open the Account & workspace panel
- Search or pick from the account dropdown
- Pick a container (usually the GTM-XXX of your current site)
- Pick the workspace — typically Default Workspace
- Click Use this workspace
Create your first tag
Click Select element, then click any button, link, or form on your site. GTM Event Helper builds a unique CSS selector, auto-suggests an event name (add_to_cart, generate_lead, view_item…), and lets you create a GA4 Event tag + trigger in one click.
- Click Select element in the popup
- Hover over the page — elements highlight as you move
- Click the element you want to track
- Review the auto-filled event name and parameters
- Click Create — the tag and trigger are pushed to GTM via the API
