GA4 Event Naming Rules

Maximum 40 characters

Event names must be 40 characters or fewer. Longer names are silently truncated by GA4.

Must start with a letter

Event names must begin with an alphabetic character (a-z, A-Z). Names starting with numbers or underscores are invalid.

Only letters, numbers, and underscores

Use snake_case format. Hyphens, spaces, and special characters are not allowed. Example: add_to_cart not add-to-cart.

Case sensitive

GA4 treats Add_To_Cart and add_to_cart as different events. Google recommends lowercase snake_case.

500 distinct event names per property

Each GA4 property supports up to 500 uniquely named events. After that, new event names won't be processed.

Reserved prefixes and names

Names starting with google_, firebase_, or ga_ are reserved. Certain names like first_open, app_remove are automatically collected.
